  •  This footage shows the testimony of General Benedicto Lucas García. He says that the guerillas were very well trained and overwhelmed the army. He talks about his role in the formation of the self-defense patrols in the villages. He talks about his respect for peasants and indigenous people. The judge asks for the reading of an 1981 press article about how the Guatemalan army was trying to annihilate the subversive movements from the western parts of the country by training villagers to fight. The General states that the journalist misunderstood, and that they were training villagers in discipline, not fighting. He says that the villagers were not armed and were trained to guide their people. He says that he is loved in his community because of the many positive things he has done.
